Undisciplined Ecologies of Making Project is inviting you to three days of building with natural materials and making in connection to the land, place and community. 

CYCLAMEN is the first workshop of the project using earth materials and traditional building techniques. The concept explores ecologies of "making our own food" with practices of care, community and circular economy. First stop in the journey is an outdoor kitchen in the Provalinthos community of Nea Makri in Greece.

The workshop team consists of architects, carpenters, builders, structural engineers and local members of the community. 

What is earth building

Earth building is the practice of construction using unfired, untreated, raw earth. It has been successfully used around the world for over 11,000 years, and it is estimated that around half the world's population today live and work in earth buildings. Earth is one of the most abundant, basic building materials. It is low technology, easily worked with simple tools, and yet can be used by anyone to construct walls, floors and roofs of advanced architectural design. Earth buildings are highly durable, have good humidity regulation and sound insulation, and are non-toxic, non-allergenic and fireproof.

Why 

This is a site that was destroyed by the wildfires of 2018 (known as Mati wildfires) and this workshop aims to contribute to a regeneration based on ecological and environmentally-friendly practices. The previously existing house is completely destroyed and the younger community is promoting principles of permaculture and integration to the natural landscape to revitalise the place and its people. 

Participation  

The registration fees include 3 days of building with earth and timber, breakfast and dinner (vegeterian), partial fee for camping accommodation and social activities. Register through the Apply button above. 

Applications close at 23:59, Tuesday 18th July 2023. We will notify you if your application has been successful or unsuccessful by Monday 31st July 2023. If your application is successful, you will be invited to process your booking for the workshop.
